    Abstract
The Town of Banff, a World Heritage Site located in Banff National Park, is both a service centre for park visitors and home to some 7,000 permanent residents. Because tourism will continue to be the driving force of the local economy, tourism activities must be accommodated within a balanced social and environmental framework. Accomplishing this will involve many challenges, given the unique economic, social, environmental and political forces that have shaped the town and park.
