Institutional and Cultural Memories: Ruth Kroek

Permanent URI for this collection

With recognition for the importance of gathering and sharing Vancouver Island University cultural and institutional memories, Patricia Geddes interviewed Ruth Kroek, a long-time employee of the Cowichan Campus, prior to retirement from her professional roles as First Nations Student Support and Education Counsellor. During four interviews, Ruth shares memories about her career roles, involvement, and contributions to the development of key First Nations programs and services at Vancouver Island University.

Topics discussed in the interviews include memories related to the beginning of the Arts One - First Nations program, the important role of Elders and Aboriginal Prayer in the classroom, local community collaborations to develop the Child and Youth Care First Nations program, teaching First Nations Women’s Studies courses, the role of First Nations advising and student support, matters of importance to Aboriginal women, and the inclusion of Aboriginal voices in postsecondary education.

Each interview is divided into sequential tracks named according to the topic for that part of the discussion. A transcript accompanies each of the four interviews.
