    Abstract
    Following a lengthy and heated debate, the former Town of Ancaster (now part of the new City of Hamilton) adopted new zoning regulations for home-based businesses. Although this activity is increasingly commonplace, some Canadians remain opposed to the idea of neighbours carrying out business in their homes. However, two years after the passing of Bylaw 99-20, it has been concluded that the new regulations are working well. The new regulations work well for two principal reasons: (1) contrary to traditional zoning bylaws and regulations, they emphasize performance indicators instead of business categories; and (2) the performance indicators reflect community standards. A comprehensive study was undertaken to understand the community's views. The hard data were also invaluable in supporting the approach that was eventually approved.
     
    L'ancienne municipalité d'Ancaster, qui fait maintenant partie de la nouvelle ville de Hamilton, a ratifié, à la suite d'un débat passionné, un règlement de zonage concernant les entreprises à domicile. Bien que de plus en plus de gens s'adonnent, à la maison, à des activités de nature commerciale, certaines personnes s'y opposent. Deux années après l'adoption du règlement 99-20, la réglementation semble avoir porté fruit. La nouvelle réglementation doit son succès au fait que, plutôt que de tenir compte du type d'activité, comme c'est généralement le cas, le règlement est fondé sur des indicateurs de performance qui reflètent les priorités sociales. Une étude approfondie a permis d'établir les besoins communautaires et d'identifier une démarche appropriée.
