When many residents of Le Village in Cornwall, Ont., were laid off from the textile mills in the 1950s, the community's physical conditions began to worsen. Many residents moved away and sold their homes to investors, who rented them out. These homes were poorly maintained over the intervening years, and began to deteriorate along with the urban and social conditions. The authors were engaged to prepare strategies for urban and architectural rehabilitation, for which the community itself was the main catalyst. This article describes the process of conceiving urban and architectural guidelines with the intention of preserving the traditional character of the neighbourhood.en
