Nanaimo Free Press headline #2
Abstract
The main issue in the strike of 1912-13 was the union recognition. Dunsmuir and other coal companies were determined not to recognize the unions. The miners were just as determined to gain union recognition. The strike started in September 1912, and by May 1913, all the Nanaimo mines were shut down. Some miners went back to work in 1913, but the Extension mines were closed until 1914.
