Abstract
In British Columbia, The Ministry of Education has determined that Grade 9 is the final year of compulsory Core French. Subsequently, student interest in upper level French courses has diminished. Recognizing the declining enrollment in Core French 10-12 resulted in the need to explore a modernized pedagogical approach in French 9. The Blended Learning model offered strategies that focused on Student Centered Learning, while favoring greater integration of technology and online learning tools into the second language classroom. In order to explore this innovation, the project addressed the Critical Challenge Question: “How can an online blended learning environment in a core French 9 classroom enhance student engagement and increase future enrollment?”. This project resulted in the creation of a class website, and an online Learning Management System using Microsoft SharePoint, constructed to facilitate a Blended Learning environment. The scope and sequence included elements of Gamification, Video Games, and other online learning tools. This website was designed with student accessibility in mind, allowing for total transparency of course materials, assignments, progress, and grades to encourage engagement, and potentially to increase enrollment, in French 9.
