Abstract
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is something that has a direct impact on a student's education. To ensure students receive a successful education it is important that educators address and support Social and Emotional Learning. To this end, Peter Benson, the founder of the Spark Institute, provides the idea of helping learners to identify their Spark. By identifying a Spark, learners become more motivated to learn and are more confident in their learning abilities (Finding the Student Spark: Missed Opportunities in School Engagement, 2020). This paper presents the opportunity for teachers to create a fusion between the Spark Initiative and the BC Ministry of Education’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. By addressing the Critical Challenge Question "How can the fusion of the Spark initiative and the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework create student success in learning, specifically for Primary students?" teachers can help students find their ‘Spark’ and allow them to flourish in their individual learning journeys. The Major Project build was developed as a companion website to support this intention. It is a curriculum-based resource that provides educators with lesson plans and related activities detailing ways to guide children to identify, explore, and connect with their individual Spark. Fusing the Spark Initiative with B C’s SEL Curriculum will provide educators with a resource that can be used to foster learning and positive well-being with their students.
