    Abstract
The sustainable management of Canada’s oceans requires balancing new marine uses while safeguarding traditional uses, all while ensuring environmental protection. Marine spatial planning is a tool that can help us plan our coastal and marine areas and support sustainable management decisions. Marine spatial planning (MSP) has been successfully applied in other countries and could help Canada address planning challenges in the marine environment. Considering the similarities between MSP and land use planning, Canada’s professional planners are well positioned to support the development of effective plans for our coastal and ocean spaces.
