Audio recording of Dr. Helen Brown's November 2002 presentation to the Nanaimo Historical Society about school board consumption in Nanaimo at the end of the 19th century. Brown, a history professor at Malaspina University-College, discusses her research, which combines gender history related to consumption with local school records. While much study has been given to consumption by individuals for private, domestic use, Brown’s research looks at men collectively consuming for public purposes, specifically school board trustee spending in Nanaimo during the 1880s and ‘90s. School construction, heating and ventilation systems, school repairs and improvements, and the acquisition of supplies, school furniture, maps, and charts are all discussed. Brown also speaks about the consumption of services, such as the employment of school caretakers.
